The Calabash Lamp by Duchenne Studio is a hand-turned wooden lamp inspired by the sculptural form of the calabash. Crafted from sustainably sourced Basswood and Walnut timber, each lamp is turned, hand-sanded, oiled, and assembled by master woodturner Jean Duchenne. Embracing the natural irregularities of wood, each lamp is subtly unique. Traditionally made from dried gourds, calabashes have long been used across Africa as vessels for food, water, and sound—transformed into everything from storage containers to musical instruments. In echoing their curved silhouettes, Duchenne celebrates both the beauty and versatility of these heritage objects. The Calabash Lamp is a tribute to functional artistry—rooted in tradition, reimagined through wood.
The Calabash lamp comes as standard with a raffia or linen lampshade. Custom shades available on request. Email sales@kombi.nyc to specify your choice of lampshade.
