Xandre Kriel’s design practice balances a mathematical approach to form with a tactile intuition for material. Blurring the line between furniture and sculpture, Kriel's designs consider both the functional and artistic simultaneously - a duality that shapes every decision in his process.
Combining the technological precision of metalwork in steel, aluminum, and bronze with intuitive hand craftsmanship in wood and stone, Kriel allows the inherent qualities of the materials to inform his design decisions.
His approach is deeply personal, even nostalgic: the rubber ‘conveyor belt’ seat of the Techno Loafer chair evokes his childhood growing up in the industrial canning town of Ashton, South Africa. Similarly, the Moor Chair incorporates heavy nautical rope, a nod to the mooring docks of Cape Town where Kriel currently resides.
As one of South Africa’s most acclaimed contemporary designers, Kriel has exhibited internationally at collectible design fairs including Design Miami and Salon Art + Design. His design practice, driven by continuous enquiry and experimentation, is ever-evolving.
Kombi is proud to represent some of Kriel’s iconic designs, such as the Samosa table and Techno Loafer, alongside newer works including the Chapel Chair and Crow Book Stand. Maintaining a hands-on approach, each Xandre Kriel piece is made-to-order, with customization as well as unique commissions available on request.
