Frances VH Mohair

Frances van Hasselt creates hand-loomed mohair rugs and tapestries that reflect the uniqueness of their origins in the remote Karoo region of South Africa. Born and raised on a family farm that owns one of the oldest mohair studs, Van Hasselt has a deep affinity with this refined natural fiber. The design studio, Frances V.H Mohair, creates textiles that are true to source, sustainable and help to preserve craftsmanship in rural South Africa.

Van Hasselt uses a specific mohair best suited to rug-making that is durable yet soft underfoot. The yarns are available both carded (washed and combed) and uncarded, in dyes ranging from subtle naturals to saturated tones that showcase mohair's lustrous ability to bring color to life. Working primarily on custom rug designs, Van Hasselt’s work extends beyond decor to become collaborations with clients who seek to capture their own stories through the medium of mohair.

In addition to designing and producing rugs, van Hasselt collaborates with local woman artisans on mohair tapestries - unique artworks combining traditional weaving techniques and freeform embroidery that are meditations on the relationship between material, memory, and making.

In September ‘25, Kombi will present a collection of Van Hasselt’s one-of-a-kind tapestries. Please email sales@kombi.nyc to request a preview.
