Founded by Mpho Vackier, The Urbanative is a contemporary furniture and product design studio based in Johannesburg. Informed by an interrogation of culture and cultural representations in modern society, the designs combine African craft influences with the form and functionality of modern materials and silhouettes. An engineer-turned-designer, Vackier regularly collaborates with other artists and designers - as in the limited edition beaded lights produced in partnership with The Herd - a platform founded by Mbali Mthethwa that works with female artisans in the craft of traditional Nguni beadwork.
