Sandile Cele creates contemporary ceramic sculptures inspired by traditional Zulu drinking vessels - a reflection of his childhood growing up in Umlazi Township, KwaZulu Natal. Now based in Cape Town, Cele’s meditation on the old and the new continues to influence his work, which simultaneously references the colorful geometric patterns of iziqhaza - the large earlobe disks traditionally worn by Zulu men and women - and his everyday urban experiences. Cele is currently working on a new body of work for Kombi, to be presented in the Fall in New York.
